Janelva (Jan) Berridge quietly left behind her family and friends on August 18, 2018. Janelva was born to Dow M. and Leona M. Wilson in May 1945 in Ketchikan, Alaska. Her father was an itinerant minister. She learned to travel early in life as she and her family left Ketchikan in December of 1946. They traveled via boat to Seattle where her Dad managed to buy a WWII surplus Army truck to hold their family goods. They then traveled cross county with main stop at the old Wilson farm near Briscoe, Texas, and then on to Greenville, South Carolina. Throughout Jan's childhood, the family also lived in Oklahoma, Texas (twice), New Mexico (twice), Idaho, Washington, and Arizona. Jan completed high school at R.A. Long High School in Longview, WA in 1963. Jan added her lovely alto voice to choirs in all three high schools she attended. Music was always a part of Jan's life. She was also an accomplished pianist.
Jan's working years saw many different efforts in a wide variety of fields. Her first serious job was a radio dispatcher for the Arizona Highway Patrol first in Kingman, AZ and later in Flagstaff. She ran a linotype for the Spokane, WA newspaper. She owned and operated a small curio shop in Kingman, AZ. Various other jobs saw Jan travel throughout the country. I think she was proudest of her work with the numerous foster children she cared for. Most of them were at risk with various health issues. They all thrived under her love and care.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents. Jan is survived by her husband of 42 years, Dale Berridge of Portland, OR, and her children Samuel (Sam) Berridge of Auburn, Indiana and Katherine (Katie) of Portland. Jan has two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Noah Berridge. Jan also has three siblings, brother Craig and Belva Wilson of Winston, OR, sister Rebecca (Becky) and Larry Brooks of Hot Springs, AR and brother Tim and Debbie Wilson of Kingman, AZ.
She will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery on September 10, 2018. There will be a graveside service with a reception to follow.
